P 365 day 67: More Quintessential Dutch

This was taken today for yesterday, I'm not going to lie, I was really stressed out yesterday and forgot to take my picture. Anyway, here is a bit of what I get to see on my bike rides. The top street is a small road, and you might be able to see a tunnel in the distance, that leads to a bike trail that goes along the side of the freeway.  You can see a Dutch farmhouse, sometimes they will have thatched roofs, but since the thatching has to be replaced every year, it's not very common anymore. Below is a different windmill than the one I posted a few weeks ago, You probably can't see, but there are sheep in these fields. The windmill didn't have it's sails open, but it was loose and turning very slowly. It was the first cloudy day in a long time that the wind wasn't blowing at 40mph. I wish the picture was better, zoomed farther, but sadly, had I zoomed it more the picture would have been bad quality.

Actually, thatching only has to be replaced every 30yrs...half way through it gets some sort of special treatment. Geez, it costs about 25,000 eur to replace an entire roof, so no way could it be done every year!

How interesting Susan, I had been told it occurs every year. I take it you know someone who lives in a thatched house? I find them rather whimsical, but if that's the required cost of maintenance, You'll never catch me living in one!

Our next door neighbour's house has a full thatched roof...and yes, it needs replacing every 30 yrs as do all thatched roofs...they are so beautiful!
